Increase in OPS Graduates

A big concern in recent years for OPS has been their graduation rates. And the work of the nagging principals and teachers has begun to pay off. OPS is seeing an increase of students graduating and completing all four years of high school. Last year, for example, Benson High School went from 70.5% to 73.1% of students graduating. The graduation push by OPS has been consistent with an attendance increase in the district. According to State Education Commissioner Roger Breed, the new challenge that OPS faces with these improved rates is that graduates are well prepared for their future and that they have been well prepared and educated for college and beyond.
I am happy that OPS is beginning to see better attendance and graduation rates. In today's economical world, people need a good education to get jobs, and to get good education one must go to school. Like Mr. Breed said, the concern now is whether or not the education provided is good enough to help adequately shape a graduate's future. Overall though, I think that these improved rates will give the incentive to improve the education provided. People will want better educations to get better jobs, and with a better attendance record, more people will see the education rates slipping or rising. And I believe that people will want the better education. So in conclusion, these improved rates are definitely for the best.

  1. Congratulations on OPS for getting graduation rates up. Now some people are probably saying, who cares? We go to Prep anyways... Well with my dad as a teacher at Omaha South, I end up involved in OPS politics, and it is important. Prep can't fill all the high-training jobs, and they really are our brothers and sisters, despite rivalries we might cling to.
I do advise the OPS faculty, governing board, etc. to not get their heads too high. While it is an awesome feat, there is nothing grunted in a couple years of data. While they should be proud, they should still keep pushing forward in order to sustain and further these results.
And, hopefully other school districts throughout the nation can experience similar results.
    God Bless America

  2. I think that this is great. This means that more students are beginning to realize that getting an education is a good thing. These students are also becoming more responsible for caring about their future. I also don't think it doesn't matter that this is about public schools, because at least these kids are getting an education, which always helps out later on in life. I think it's rude and ignorant to say that it doesn't matter that these kids are graduating just because they're graduating from a public school. They still have an option to be successful in life.

  3. This is very good news! My mother is an OPS teacher at Edison Elementary. I also attended this school from 1-3 grade, and it's my personal belief that this increase is due not only to an increase in awareness of the importance; but also the early teachers in a child's education. They, through their love for teaching and their compassionate and loving way of getting kids to love learning; are who start these kids on their journey to graduate. They are very crucial to this factor I believe. Thank you for the great post, it's very exciting to see some good news a midst all of the violence and negative news in our world.
